Happy Constitution and Citizenship Day!

Welcome to Tony Island Blog!

Today, September 17, we celebrate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day! On this date, in 1787, the Constitution was signed and sent to the states for ratification.

Here's a wonderful animated short about the Constitution by Schoolhouse Rock:

Doesn't that video give you a warm, fuzzy in your heart?

Happy Labor Day (but are you working?)!

Welcome to Tony Island Blog!

Happy Labor Day, 2011 to you!

This Labor Day (as the past few have) brings a few important questions:

1) Are you working? Bonus: How long have you been employed by your current company?

2) If not, how long have you been unemployed? Bonus: How long were you employed before your layoff?

3) If you are working, how's the health of your company? Your industry?

The President is scheduled to make a "major" jobs speech this coming Thursday. What do you think he'll propose to get the jobs engine running again? What do you think he should propose?

Feel free to vent some frustrations here in our comments section - it sometimes helps.

Watch What You Eat - Literally!

Welcome to my blog!

I wanted to bring two important food related films to your attention.

Fast Food Nation The first film, Fast Food Nation, is based on the book of the same name, but instead of making it a straight documentary (as the book is) the movie is a fictionalized journey of a fast food manager finding out where the food he serves originates. While I didn't read the book, I did find the movie compelling. I found the stories within the main story interesting and never "preachy" except for one small segment with college students. Overall, this film really hits you and makes you want to re-evaluate what you eat and where it comes from. Strongly recommended.

Food, Inc. The second feature, Food, Inc., is a straight up documentary on where our food comes from. It's a rather disturbing documentary. Its basic emphasis is on where our meat comes from and how the corn industry has manipulated our food chain for the worse. It's a real eye-opener and is also strongly recommended viewing.

These two movies will really hit you in the gut and hopefully inspire you to change your food habits for the better (more veggies, less meat, more natural foods, less processed foods).

Have you seen either or both of these films? How did it affect you? Did they change your eating habits? Share any thoughts below!

Super Bowl Sunday - New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts

Welcome to my blog!

This Sunday, February 7, 2010, is Super Bowl Sunday. The NFC Champions New Orleans Saints will be facing the AFC Champions Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl 44.

I am rooting for the New Orleans Saints. They had a great year - winning the first 13 games in a row. This will be their first ever Super Bowl appearance. They remind me a bit of the 2007 New England Patriots with their high-powered offense, though the offensive juggernaut of the first half of the season didn't quite carry over to the second half. They did get the job done though. They have a bit of a Cinderella aura surrounding them ever since Hurricane Katrina.

I'm not that great at making scoring predictions, but I'll say the Saints win by 3 points (a field goal).

So - tell us your thoughts about Super Bowl 44 - are you watching? Who's gonna win? And by how big a margin?? Leave your comments below!

Stressed Out? Try this video game!

Welcome to my blog!

Stressed out?

Worrying about your next date or the big presentation to your boss? Feeling low? Instead of running to the closest book-store to find a trendy self-help book, get MindHabits. Find relief at the click of a mouse. A video game that is actually good for you? Now, that's a concept!

Based on social intelligence research conducted at McGill University, these stress busting, confidence boosting games use simple, fun-to-play exercises that help players develop and maintain a more positive state of mind.

I downloaded the demo - it's pretty interesting. They explain each game's scientific basis. You can keep track of your progress with the Progress Tracker.

AIG Bonus Payouts - what's the big deal?

Welcome to my blog!

For a week now, we've been hearing about the "outrage" over the AIG bonus payouts. I really don't get what all the hoopla is about. While it may not have been the most prudent thing AIG could have done with the bailout money, the government did give AIG the bailout money with little or no strings attached - why then is everyone upset over the payouts?

I really have to laugh at the politicians that are outraged over this "misuse" of government funds. You mean appropriating money for "roads to nowhere" is a better use of taxpayer money?? Oh wait, it must be the pork barrel spending on the sex life of a silk worm that is a better use of taxpayer money? Surely saving a useless Air Force or Army base in your district must be a better use of taxpayer money?? Are politicians kidding themselves? Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. The politicians should be LAST in line of those complaining over the misuse of taxpayers money. We're throwing billions (now near trillions) of dollars to all sectors of the economy in the hopes of staving off another "Great Depression"...yet, not much seems to be working, except the disappearance of taxpayer's money and confidence.

It's time we all take a deep breath, sit back and study what's going on. I don't have the solutions to this current "crisis" but I do know that getting mad at AIG (and even having the gall to pass legislation to tax someone's bonus) isn't the answer. If we the people now own 80% of AIG, it's time we started acting like managers and begin correcting the problems.

Adding more hot air to the fire isn't going to put it out.

Share your thoughts on the AIG fiasco below.

Pride ... or ... Prejudice?

Welcome to my blog!

I don't want to get deep into my personal politics, but I did vote for President Obama for various reasons.

I like to see the pageantry and appreciate the significance of the peaceful transition of power from one President to the next. As such, I had the TV on in work on Tuesday to try and catch what I could of the festivities. Several co-workers made comments that I thought fairly inappropriate and sad. There didn't seem to be much evidence of a healing of the races. While nothing said was overly racial, the comments spoke volumes.

I also found negative comments by some friends and family members. I was a little surprised (and somewhat saddened) considering the worldwide euphoria surrounding this election and transition.

I can only hope that people keep an open mind and give the new President a chance to make changes for the better.

What reactions did you find? Positive, negative, surprising, disappointing? Let us know by leaving a comment below!
