The Second Amendment from a Victim's Point of View

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

I wanted to share a somewhat powerful defense of the Second Amendment:

I don't want to editorialize here - just allow it to sink in.

Now - what are your thoughts? The speaker apparently "gets" what the 2nd Amendment is all about. Do you think the Senators there "got it"? Leave some thoughts below.

Guns Don't Make Us Safer

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

I wanted to share this picture I saw on Facebook:

On the surface, we see the pure hypocrisy of liberals - they don't want us to have guns, but they can have them. But dig a little deeper and you see the ideal world of Progressive Liberals - the government has all the guns and the people have none.

That didn't work too well in World War II Germany and it doesn't work any better today.

Remember - if they take away your 2nd Amendment rights today, which one will they take away tomorrow?

Comments are strongly requested.

Gift Idea Day 12 - Poseidon Adventure DVD

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

We've come to the final day of our 12 Days of Gift Ideas! I hope you've enjoyed it.

The Poseidon Adventure [Blu-ray] is Irwin Allen's disaster masterpiece. An ocean liner capsizes on New Year's Eve...trapping all onboard. A small group of passengers attempts to escape by heading for the bottom (now the top) of the ship. This is really great stuff - a good story, characters and special effects. Buy this one for New Year's Eve and enjoy!

Gift Idea Day 11 - James Bond Archives

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

The James Bond Archives is a lavish tribute to the longest running series in movies history - the James Bond franchise. 592 pages contain over 1000 images, behind the scenes info and more on every Bond film from Dr No to Skyfall. This is another one of those "wish list" items for me. If you (or someone you know) are a fan of Bond, I really think you should add this to your library.

Thoughts on Newtown, CT incident

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

As Newtown, CT continues to recover from the recent tragic events there, many Leftists are taking the opportunity to turn this into a power grab and further erode our Constitutional protections. Instead of looking into why these things happens, they only look into the "how". They conveniently forget that Timothy McVeigh didn't use a gun to do his mass murdering nor did the 9/11 terrorists - yet the murders committed on those two days were far higher than Newtown. This isn't to belittle the recent tragedy nor to play a numbers game of who's bigger than who. It's merely to put things into perspective.

Banning guns really isn't going to stop psychotic people from committing crimes - on the same day as the Newtown tragedy, there was a report that a man in China had slashed upwards of 20 school age children - I'm not sure if there were any deaths reported. The reason he used a knife? China strictly controls guns. So, like the police department that cracks down on drugs on one street corner only to see the activity move to another, so do murderers change weapons when another one is not available.

Another issue we need to address is the publicizing of these incidents. As soon as the tragedy occurred, the main networks were on the story for upwards of 6 hours of live coverage - falsely reporting many details as soon as a snippet was uttered. There was much confusion for example over where the murderer's mother was killed - Connecticut or New Jersey? Her supposed connection to the school (teacher or assistant?), etc. If we would STOP publicizing these incidents, it might help in bringing them down. Maybe not, but it can't hurt. I find it odd that if you watch a sports event and a spectator jumps onto the playing field, the game is immediately halted and the cameras do NOT show the perpetrator. Why? So as to prevent copycat incidents. YET, in these murderous rampages, we continually show footage of the carnage and murderer over and over again. Isn't that part of the problem in this 24/7 news cycle world we live in? Why do advertisers believe that with a 30 second commercial we'll run out and buy their product YET with 2 hours of violent exposure in a movie, we won't be affected? Isn't Hollywood on the hook for any of this?

Some on the Left believe that the Constitution and its bedrock principles of free men and their right to maintain their freedom are "outdated" in our "progressive" world. Freedom is not outdated. Tyrannical governments are not outdated. The need to protect your freedom is not outdated. What is outdated is the idea that we can restrict the rights of many in hopes of slowing down the few.

Stand up for your rights. If you let them take those away today, imagine what they'll take away tomorrow.

Gift Idea Day 7 - Here Come the Black Helicopters

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

In Here Come the Black Helicopters!: UN Global Governance and the Loss of Freedom Dick Morris and Eileen McGann bring to light how Obama plans to use various UN treaties (being negotiated or voted on now) to strip Americans of the freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution. I find Dick Morris' books interesting. I liked this one as it discusses a subject that really isn't being covered much in other conservative books but is important to keep your eye on as it has far reaching consequences for Americans if these treaties are adopted by the Federal government.

Gift Idea Day 6 - It Is Dangerous to be Right...

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

I couldn't sum up the book any better than the book's Amazon.com description:
"If the government exists to serve us, and if freedom is part of our humanity, how can the government take freedom from us?  Is human freedom in America a myth, or is it reality?  The United States of America was born out of a bloody revolt against tyranny.  Yet almost from its inception, the government here has suppressed liberty.  Within the pages of It Is Dangerous to Be Right When the Government Is Wrong: The Case for Personal Freedom , New York Times best-selling author Judge Andrew P. Napolitano lays out the case that the U.S. government, whose first obligation is to protect and preserve individual freedoms, actually does neither."

Judge Napolitano writes with passion and it shows in this book. He gives example after example of how the Federal government has gone beyond the bounds to restrict our freedoms. I strongly recommend reading this book before it's too late.

Just a quick note to let you know that our 12 Days Gift Ideas for Conservatives will resume on Monday December 17.

Enjoy your weekend!

Gift Idea Day 5 - Founding Documents

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

The Declaration Of Independence, Constitution Of The United States Of America, Bill Of Rights And Constitutional Amendments is a no-brainer that every Conservative should have. Admittedly, you don't have to get this particular book, but everyone should have a copy of these important documents. This edition simply presents them as they are. There are others with interpretations and commentary. If you get one of those, be sure to pick something libertarian or conservative otherwise you'll go crazy!

Gift Idea Day 4 - Liberty Defined

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

I''ve discussed Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom by Ron Paul in an earlier post. I think this is a good time of year to pick this one up, read it and then reflect on it. Dr Paul goes over 50 topics, including abortion and defense spending, laying the groundwork for what liberty means. That is, what it's like to live without a nanny state government telling us how to live.

Gift Idea Day 3 - Kiplinger/Money subscriptions

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

If you purchased and read our previous Gift Ideas, you'll have the foundation you need to put the concepts into reality. Both Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine (1-year) and Money (1-year auto-renewal) will help you invest your hard earned cash for short term and long term goals. Each month both magazines cover a variety of personal finance topics along with stock, bond and mutual fund ideas to help you meet your goals. I've been reading both magazines for years (along with the now defunct Smart Money) and can say they've been helpful with all the information and ideas they've presented. Just reading the magazines inspire you to save and invest - whether or not you take their specific advice.

Gift Idea Day 2 - Basic Economics

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

Today's gift idea is Basic Economics: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy by libertarian economist Thomas Sowell. This book is hefty but manages to present its ideas in a straight forward manner. I put it aside to read some other books so I did not finish it. What I read was enlightening, enough so to recommend it. There are critics of the book (of course) who decry its libertarian leanings. I rather liked reading something that wasn't the same viewpoint we always hear. I suggest reading it and making up your own mind.

Have some different gift ideas you'd like to share? Jot them in the comments section or send them to me.

Gift Idea Day 1 - Red Ink

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

For the first gift idea, I suggest Red Ink: Inside the High-Stakes Politics of the Federal Budget. This book, written by Wall Street Journal economics editor David Wessel, tells "where the trillions come from, where they go and why inaction imperils our future". It's not a dry read nor is it an indepth discussion about the Federal budget. It's a fairly easy read that touches on major issues about taxing and spending. I found a slight liberal tilt but for the most part it's non-partisan. I recommend it.

Be sure to return tomorrow for Gift Idea Day 2!

Fiscal Cliff = Fiscal Joke

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

You've undoubtedly heard about the "fiscal cliff" recently - those budget cuts and tax increases that will cause the world to end if they are allowed to be enacted.

Of course, as with anything coming out of Washington, D.C. these days, it's a bunch of hooey. The tax increases won't cause the world to end and the budget cuts are mere trims - $110 billion per year evenly split between defense and non-defense spending - the overall budget is somewhere in the $3 trillion range. You'll hear about the "ten year" $500 billion cuts to defense...really? Over ten years? That's nothing. Same with the non-defense side.

The big hoax is that we are a nation of laws and as such this "law" can be repealed and/or worked around. It's not a Constitutional amendment - it's a law.

Then, why all the nail-biting, hand wringing going on? Politics, pure and simple. The Democrats want to scare the country (and the Republican party) into tax increases on "the rich"...as though that will solve the problem - it won't and they know it. They merely want to demonize successful people in order to pump themselves up with the underclass, who are good for voting Democrat. All of these social programs, from Social Security to Medicare, are NOT intended to solve any particular problem (or they wouldn't be insolvent) BUT to cement the Democratic party's power. The hope is that every time you cash your Social Security check, you'll pull the Democrat lever in the voting booth.

I hope the Republicans hold their ground and resist tax changes unless there are strong entitlement overhauls. These programs can't go on like this without substantial change. Of course, the Democrats are resisting any change to social programs and the country believes that Republicans ("as usual") are stonewalling simply not to raise taxes on the rich when the real reason is that tax increases, in the past, have ALWAYS resulted in MORE spending and NEVER any cuts. Obama hasn't even proposed any serious cuts or reforms, which shows you how this is all politics.

Sad.

Please leave your comments about the "fiscal cliff" below.

What the 2012 Election did (and didn't) Tell Us

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

Just another post in a series of occasional analyses of the 2012 Presidential election. Here, I want to highlight some things that were made evident by the final results.

In no particular order -

1) There is no mandate - Every victor claims a mandate, even when there isn't one. And this is a case of "there isn't one". Obama's popular vote numbers and electoral votes were down from 2008. How could there be a mandate? The Democrats successfully demonized "the rich" and tarred and feathered Romney with that evil moniker. Since the economic meltdown was caused by Wall Street, anything touching Wall Street (however remotely) was deemed bad.

In reality, it's tough to change horses mid-stream. The electorate didn't quite like the alternative enough and thus stuck with the devil they know.

2) The Republican Party isn't dead - despite grave dancing by Progressives, the Republican party is far from dead. Republican Governorships are at an all time high of 30. They successfully held onto the House (some minor seats changed party) and held steady in the Senate for the most part. The American electorate is split and thus handed the country the same messy Congress and President as before the election. So there's hope for Republicans yet.

2a) The Tea Party movement isn't dead - Yes, there were some setbacks for the Tea Party this election cycle. I think any group that is born of a furor of energy will eventually peter out. The Tea Party's energy was spent quite a bit in 2010 and there wasn't much left in the tank for 2012. As the economy continues to tread water and taxes begin their inevitable hike along with the messiness of Obamacare, the Tea Party will refocus and become a force again in 2016 (though I think 2014 will be a key milestone in determining the movement's future)

3) Women are the swing voters - When it's all said and done, I believe that women will be the key to Republican success. While everyone is busy pandering to Latinos or other "important demographic" groups, it's women who should be pandered to. While there was recognition of this fact at the Convention, there didn't seem to be enough penetration of the women's vote to make a difference. Republicans should continue to respect the sanctity of life and be against abortion, but the issue shouldn't become a political wedge to separate the party from women. Life should be celebrated, women's role in creating life should be revered, but not to an extreme that women feel threatened if Republicans are in charge. We also need to balance women's concerns with business needs.

4) The 2016 field will be deep & wide - The only silver lining to Obama's re-election is the vast field of candidates on tap from both parties in 2016. I believe that the Republican crop will be especially deep if such up  and coming luminaries as Rubio, Martinez and Haley, among others, run. They are all true conservatives with vibrant personalities who will ignite a spark in the Republican party.

5) Obama will continue to lie - I have to actually give Obama some credit as he will finally meet with Romney on November 29. Obama had told his supporters on election night that he would meet with Romney and then "forgot" until asked by a reporter in a press conference a week after the election. But that one "truth" doesn't justify all the lies he's told these past four years. And all the lies he will tell in the coming four.

6) Obama will over reach in his 2nd Term - despite reassurances following his re-election that he "understands" the history of 2nd term Presidential failures, I believe Obama's super-ego is too large not to attempt an over reach and it won't be pretty when it happens. I can't quite put my finger on what he will do, but rest assured he will do something stupid. He's no smarter than Clinton and look at that fiasco.

7) The parties are even - if you look at the 56 year time span (1960 - 2016) of modern politics, you find that both parties controlled the Presidency for exactly 28 years each (Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton; Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Bush). So it's quite silly for any one side to claim superiority in the Presidential arena. Yes demographics are changing, perhaps to the Democrats favor, but not all is lost. Bold moves by Republicans in economic theory and social issues, similar to what elected Reagan for two terms, will have the party back in full swing with REAL mandates for change. Unless Democrats continually nominate black men, they won't have a lock on minority votes. And eventually you run out of special interest groups or their requests become too big and you have nothing else to offer.

That's it for now. What do YOU think the election told us? Let us know by leaving come comments below.

"Bush hangover", religion doom GOP White House bid

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

Well, it's been a few weeks since the presidential election so I thought now would be a good time to post some thoughts on it all.

If you listened solely to conservative talk shows, you got the feeling that momentum was on Romney's side, especially after the first debate which he handled masterfully. Things got dicey in the remaining two debates as Mr Obama came out swinging and a bit snarky. Another momentum obstacle was Hurricane Sandy. I was afraid that this would give the President an edge and I think it did. He showed himself to be presidential more or less. Governor Christie's warming up to the President also helped.

I'm not sure those points actually are what did Romney in though. For that, I think we can point to two big issues - Bush and religion. I think the Democrats were able to successfully link Romney to Bush (as Republicans linked Mondale to Carter in 1984) and make Romney the second coming of Bush. While I don't believe this would have been true (Romney was far more successful than Bush in business), the electorate thought otherwise.

Another rarely mentioned point was religion. Romney's Mormon religion posed a problem for Conservative Christians, many of whom don't believe that Mormons are Christians. I think this held them back from pulling the lever for Romney. As a matter of fact, I think they actually sat out this election cycle as the overall voting numbers and percentage are down from 2008. While Christian Conservatives may not have been enough to push Romney over the top by themselves, I certainly think it would have helped.

But there's more to this pie than two slices. Another two slices are the Democrats skill in dividing the electorate and Obama's race card. We must congratulate the Democrats on successfully dividing the electorate into little pieces. From birth control to abortion, the Democrats used the majority women's vote and hammered Republicans from all sides. While Republicans have been against abortion in their party platform for years, the Democrats successfully used the issue to scare millions of women. Neither party would be able to overturn Roe vs. Wade on its own nor would they as it's a HUGE money maker for them. The Republicans held control of Congress for 6 years while Bush was in office and yet abortion is as available as ever. Birth control is a private matter and no national Republican candidate was calling for its elimination or control, yet Democrats used this naked lie to get out the vote. It was amazing how a college student's testimony to Congress back in the spring was masterfully used in the fall elections.

With absolutely no agenda for moving America "forward" (despite the campaign slogan), the Democrats trotted out the old chestnuts of women's rights, minority rights and senior citizens. The all-white, all-rich Republican ticket didn't stand a chance.

Another salvo to the Republicans was Obama's race. Blacks voted upward of 90+% for Obama. No amount of pandering was going to change those numbers significantly.

Despite all that, Romney actually gained electoral votes over McCain and depending on which vote totals you use, came within earshot of McCain's totals or actually above them.

The Republican party isn't dead yet. There's work to do to straighten the ship, but it can be done.

Share your thoughts on why Romney lost in the comment section below.

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

I wanted to get out the word about a free movie (The Hope and The Change) that is available on Hulu, com.

The official description from Hulu.com sums it up nicely: "The Hope & The Change interviews 40 Democrats and Independents who were onetime supporters and voted for Barack Obama in 2008, but due to runaway spending, unemployment, debt, and deficits, can no longer continue their support of President Obama in 2012."

Check it out. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

Here's an excerpt from the link above:

2016 Obama's America takes audiences on a gripping visual journey into the heart of the world’s most powerful office to reveal the struggle of whether one man's past will redefine America over the next four years. The film examines the question, "If Obama wins a second term, where will we be in 2016?"

Is Government Spending "trickle down economics"?

Welcome to Tony Island blog!

In his latest ads and campaign stops, Mr Obama rails against the Republican plan to lower taxes and regulations (essentially "get government out of the way") as "trickle down economics".

"We've tried that before and it didn't work", he rails (and don't you just hate the way he treats us as he would a group of students in one of his lecture halls - the finger pointing, the hand raising gestures, etc? That irks me to no end!)

But then Obama goes on to propose more government spending - money to buy crops and livestock from farmers. Money for "green jobs". Money for college students' debt, et al.

I have to ask though - isn't all this government spending "trickle down economics" by any other name? Why is it when the President proposes spending public money it's "jump starting" the economy yet when the Republicans propose spending private money, it's "trickle down economics"? I don't see the difference myself.

Of course, the larger issue is that all the current government spending hasn't done diddly squat to get the economy moving. If public spending were the panacea to our ills, we'd never have recessions in the first place - I mean, if a 3.5 trillion dollar budget isn't enough to keep the economy going, what is? And that's only at the Federal level - think of the billion dollar budgets each of the 50 states create and the billions of dollars (cumulatively) the municipalities spend every year. Yet, we are still in a deep recession with 8+% unemployment. Why hasn't all that spending worked? Because it's merely shifting money from one group to another group and not creating any lasting value. It's not creating wealth - it's merely swishing it around. And in the long run, that doesn't work.

The Democrats are going to be trotting out some favorite chestnuts this year - since they haven't been able to fix the economy, it's all they have to work with.

One of them is "investing in infrastructure". They want to "fix the roads and bridges". That's all well and good but how many jobs does that really create? If you're a 48 year old unemployed (or under-employed) computer systems analyst, how does fixing roads and bridges help you? How about if you're an unemployed steel worker? Auto worker? White collar office worker? While massive increases in infrastructure spending will jack up employment in the short term, it's only going to bring in extra workers around the periphery that are willing to take on such back breaking work. That is, most unemployed computer programmers aren't going to pick up a shovel or learn to use a tar smoother to get a job. And even if they do, these extra jobs are going to be relatively unskilled until the worker hones his natural ability to work on road and bridge projects. And of course, what happens in the winter when large areas of the country become impossible to work in? We're back to square one.

The reality is that the government needs to step aside and let the private economy find its footing naturally. When things hit bottom, they will begin to slowly but surely move back up. And if the government would stay away from picking winners and losers and not artificially creating bubbles in various sectors of the economy, then things will be better still.

It's time to stop government "trickle down economics" and let market economics work its magic.

What are your thoughts? Share them below!

The Race is ON!

Welcome to Tony Island Blog!

Well, we had a nail-biter in Iowa last night. I won't get into much analysis here - just want to say that I don't think Santorum has "legs" going into New Hampshire. It will be interesting to see though if his semi-win in Iowa will spill over into next week's New Hampshire primary.

What do you think of the Iowa Caucus results? Have you decided on a Presidential candidate when it comes time to vote in your state's primary? What if your candidate drops out before your primary - who is your backup?

Let's get some discussion going about the Presidential candidates. Tony Island blog is your forum to discuss the issues!
